JHARKHAND

After India's independence in 1947, the region was split into new states such as Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Bihar. In 2000, a campaign for a separate state by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) culminated in the passage of the Bihar Reorganisation Act, creating Jharkhand as a new Indian state.                                  The old name of Jharkhand is Khukhra or Kukra during the Mughal period. In medieval times, the region was also referred to as Jharkhand, which translates to "land of forests".
